Eternal Summer - gtm

ETERNAL SUMMER (DVD)
Two longtime best friends find their deep bond -- and its platonic nature -- tested when a female student enters the fray.
A coming-of-age tale with a queer love triangle twist, Eternal Summer begins as two very different elementary school boys, the rebellious Shane and the studious Jonathan, are paired up during a class exercise. Over the years they forge an unlikely, enduring and even loving friendship. Come senior year in high school, a new student, Carrie, falls for Jonathan but realizes that her crush is futile since Jonathan’s romantic and sexual interests lie elsewhere: with Shane. She now turns instead to Shane for affection and, like a Mentos dropped in a bottle of Diet Coca-Cola, her presence in the equation causes an explosion of long-bottled up emotions and urges. Stylishly directed by one of Taiwan’s new wave of auteurs -- 26-year-old Leste Chen, whose first feature, Two Heirlooms, broke box office records back home -- Eternal Summer perfectly captures a fumbling first love as experienced by adolescents who simply aren’t sure how to comply with the desires that their hearts are throbbing with. It’s a gorgeous, evocative and sensual work, thanks in no small part to its handsome young leads, and it represents one of the finest entries in this watershed year (in quantity, quality and explicitness) for Asian queer cinema.
